Biodiversity is like the engine that keeps our planet running smoothly. It’s the variety of life on Earth, including plants, animals, and microorganisms.

Each species plays a unique role in its ecosystem, from pollinating plants to decomposing matter. High biodiversity makes ecosystems more resilient to changes and disturbances, like climate change or disease outbreaks. This ensures they continue to provide essential services to humans, such as clean water, fertile soil, and natural resources for medicine and materials.

Biodiversity also supports ecotourism and recreation, bringing joy to people worldwide. By protecting biodiversity, we can ensure a healthy planet for future generations.

Discovering Local Biodiversity

Let's explore the variety of plants and animals in our local area and learn why it's important to have different kinds of living things around us.

What You Need:

Where to go:

Go to a safe and easy-to-reach outdoor area, like a school garden, park, or nature reserve.

What We'll Do:

Biodiversity means all the different kinds of plants and animals in a place. It's important because it helps the environment stay healthy and beautiful. Today, we will explore and write down the different plants and animals we find.

Take your notebook and pencil. I’ll show you how to use the magnifying glass and small containers. If you have a field guide, I'll show you how to use it to identify plants and animals.

We’ll go to our outdoor area and start looking around. Write down the different plants and animals you see in your notebook. Use the magnifying glass to look closely at small insects and plants. If you find a small insect, you can gently put it in a jar to look at it closely, but remember to let it go after you're done. If you have a camera, take pictures of what you find.

Writing Down Observations

Use your worksheet to write down what you see. Draw pictures and write names or descriptions of the plants and animals. Notice their colors, shapes, sizes, and any interesting features.
